What's In It?

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal chemical added to soaps, body washes, toothpaste, cosmetics, deodorants and beyond personal care. It turns up in cutting boards, toys, mattresses, clothing, and furniture fabric. Marketed as "antibacterial." It was created in 1972 as a hospital surgical scrub and later found its way into everyday consumer goods. (uwaterloo).

Why it matters:

Here's the catch: the FDA has found no evidence that triclosan in personal care products provides any extra benefit to health beyond its anti-gingivitis effect in toothpaste. It's never been shown that antibacterial soaps with triclosan work any better than plain soap and water. So you're not getting protection — but studies suggest you may be getting risk.

Research has linked triclosan to disruption of thyroid, testosterone, and estrogen regulation. Prolonged exposure during fetal development, infancy, and childhood can cause particularly severe, permanent effects.

It's also a driver of antibiotic resistance — the more we flood households with it, the tougher the bacteria that survive become. In 2016, the FDA banned triclosan from liquid hand soaps, Although it's still allowed in toothpaste and in many household plastics and textiles.

The Swap

Skip anything labeled "antibacterial" unless it's for genuine medical use. Plain soap and water is just as effective at removing everyday germs. Check labels on cutting boards, toys, and kitchenware for "Microban," It's a trade name triclosan is sold under.

Bottom line:

"Antibacterial" sounds like extra protection. For most households it's extra risk with no real reward! Regular soap does the job triclosan doesn't do.
