MAYDAY! The Air "Freshener" Isn't Freshing Anything!
The Air "Freshener" Isn't Freshening Anything! You're not masking odors. You're adding pollutants and calling it clean!

What's in them?
Plug-ins, sprays, and gel packs are fragrance-delivery devices. "Fragrance" is a legal loophole that lets companies hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals behind one word. Common findings include phthalates (to make scent last), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. In some sprays, propellants that react with ozone in the air form more formaldehyde after you've sprayed it.
Why it matters
These products don't clean air! They add particles and gases to it, continuously! In an enclosed space you breathe it all day! Studies link regular air freshener use to headaches, respiratory irritation, and asthma symptoms. Kids and people with existing lung conditions get hit the hardest! . Plug-ins are especially bad! Because they release fragrance chemicals around the clock! Not just when you spray!
The swap
Open a window. Simmer citrus peels or cinnamon on the stove. Use a bowl of baking soda for ongoing odor absorption. If you want scent, choose products that fully disclose ingredients (not just "fragrance"). Or use pure essential oils sparingly. A few drops on a cotton ball, not a diffuser running nonstop.
Bottom line
If a product's purpose is to change what your air smells like. Ask what it's actually putting into that air. "Fresh" shouldn't come out of an aerosol can!
